Deputy Minister for Water has said the reasons advanced by the contractor to justify delay in the Same-Mwanga-Korogwe water project in Kilimanjaro Region were not plausible and has called for an emergency meeting of stakeholders to iron out whatever thorny issues holding back the project.

After inspecting the project recently, Mr. Aweso voiced his concern and noted with dismay that the project had not been completed despite a directive that was issued by Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa in July 2019.

According to a statement released by the ministry recently, Mr. Aweso, who was visiting the project for the fourth time, found the reasons the contractors gave for the delay to be “not plausible at all” and that the ministry could not allow them to work according to their own terms.

In particular, the minister ruled that there could be no excuse whatsoever, given the fact that the Government had resolved the issue of containers that had been held at the port and that the contractors had already been paid USD 71.76 million.

He warned that the meeting called would be the last. The Same-Mwanga-Korogwe water project is one of the major projects being implemented by the Government at a cost of about 600 bn/- with a view to addressing water shortage affecting a total of 438,931 people in the districts of Same, Mwanga and Korogwe.
