The government has allocated TZS 660 billion for works designed to improve the infrastructure of the city of Dar es Salaam, TPJ has leant.

This came to light recently during laying of the foundation stone for the 9.2 km Kimara to Kibaha Maili moja road works meant to expand the section into an eight-lane highway.

Speaking at the event which he was officiating, President John Pombe Magufuli said the project was indicative of what was coming to meet the government’s resolve towards improving the city’s infrastructure an exercise which, he said, would banish its endemic traffic jams.

“We came up with a decision to expand the city’s infrastructure, including construction of the 220 km of roads worth TZS 660 billion aimed to ease access of social services” he said.

He added: “It has never happened in history for the government to set aside such [huge] amount of funds just for Dar es Salaam, and this is just the beginning.”

The Kimara to Kibaha Maili moja section is part of the ever busy Dar es Salaam to Morogoro Road which links the port of Dar es Salaam to the country’s hinterland and beyond.

The 140.5 billion project, which is being implemented by local firm namely Estim Construction Co. Ltd, under the supervision of Tanzania Roads Agency (Tanroads), is scheduled to be completed by January 2020.

Earlier, Chief Executive Officer of Tanroads, Eng. Patrick Mfugale, had told President Magufuli that the works would involve erection of bridges at Kibamba, Kiluvya, and Mpiji.

On 27th September this year, President Magufuli mentioned the 21-kilometer road to link Mbagala, Gerezani, Kivukoni, Chang’ombe and Magomeni as one of the major city road works in the pipeline.
