The Tanzania Rural and Urban Road Agency (TARURA) in Rukwa Region has empowered several firms residing in the region by giving them priority in the procurement of contractors to implement road works with a combined length of 241.7 kilometres.

A statement issued by the Rukwa Regional Commissioner’s office recently, said contracts for the works, worth 2.8 billion/-, were awarded by TARURA with an eye on empowering local contractors, which helped secure to them 12 out of 18 contracts, or 67 percent of the total awarded.

The Region’s Administrative Secretary, Mr Benard Makali, called for close supervision of the projects and a timely disbursement of funds to contractors to enable them complete the works in the times specified in the contracts.

He also cautioned against misdeeds in the implementation of the projects saying, “The Government will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against anyone caught engaging in unethical undertakings.”

Speaking on behalf of contractors, Eng. Anyosisye Kiluswa sought to reassure the Government that they would strive to meet its expectations but appealed to TARURA to play its part well by ensuring disbursement of contractors’ payments on time.

The works entail construction and renovation of roads, culverts as well as road signs.
