Construction of a new ferry to ply between Kigongo and Busisi on Lake Victoria in Mwanza region is underway to boost Government’s efforts in easing movement of people and goods on Africa’s largest lake, TPJ has learnt.
The Chief Executive Officer of Tanzania Electrical Mechanical and Electronics Service Agency (Temesa), Dr. Mussa Mgwatu, officiated in Mwanza recently the keel laying ceremony for the 250 - tonne ferry project which is being undertaken by the Mwanza-based Songoro Marine Transport Limited at a cost of 8.9bn/-.
Dr. Mgwattu underlined the anticipated role of the ferry in improving marine transportation in the area and implored the contractor to complete the project by January 2018 as per the contract.
“The ferry will improve movement of people and goods across the lake and hence boost economic activities in the region,” he said and added that the new ferry would operate alongside MV Sengerema, MV Misungwi and MV Sabasaba which already ply the busy route.
At the ceremony, the Managing Director of Songoro Marine Transport Limited, Mr. Salehe Songoro, applauded the Government’s commitment in promoting local contractors through increased opportunities and promised to execute the project to the highest standards expected.
