The Government has said procurement of medicines and medical supplies direct from manufactures has proved to be cost effective and therefore was the appropriate way of acquiring these goods in the country.
Presenting budget estimates for his office for the Financial Year 2017/18 in Parliament in Dodoma recently, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, while not revealing the savings obtained after the Government adopted the arrangement, said next year’s budget for procurement of medicines and medical supplies would be increased to 251bn/- from last year’s figure of 31bn/-.
He attributed the new figure to the Government’s determination to improve availability of health services by constructing more health centres and pharmacies as well as enhancing the public’s accessibility to medicines and medical supplies.
Minister for Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children Ummy Mwalimu was quoted in the media recently as saying that procurement of drugs and medical supplies would now be directly from manufacturers “as this would ensure value for money.”
