Turkey has shown interest in financing construction of a section of the standard gauge central railway line, it has been learnt.
Speaking in Dar es Salaam at a press conference in the presence of his Turkish counterpart who was on a two-day visit to Tanzania, President John Magufuli revealed that Turkish President, Mr. Recep Erdogan, had received positively the Government’s request for Turkey’s Exim Bank to finance part of the central railway line 1,259 kilometre project.
Reli Assets Holding Company Limited (RAHCO) announced last year tenders for design and build contract for the railway line, which upon completion, will link Dar es Salaam port with the landlocked Rwanda, Burundi and Eastern part of Democratic Republic of Congo and facilitate transport in the central corridor.
The works include design and build contract for the 202 kilometre line from Dar es Salaam to Morogoro, 336 kilometre from Morogoro to Makutopora, 294 kilometre stretch from Makutopora to Tabora, 133 kilometre along Tabora to Isaka and works contract for 294 kilometre stretch from Isaka to Mwanza.
The Government had earlier announced that China’s Exim Bank had also agreed to release funds to the tune of 7.6 billion US dollars to finance the project.
